Dr Patrick Martin, NTU gave a talk on the 11th August 2017, at Bukit Panjang High School to a group of high school students (aged 13–16). The title of the talk was “The Future of the Oceans”, and it was organised through the annual Asia Oceania Geoscience Society conference. In his talk, he first introduced the students to oceanography as a scientific discipline, then highlighted some of the main threats to the oceans from nutrient pollution, rising atmospheric CO2 concentrations, and over-fishing. Using several examples, Dr Patrick Martin then explained how a scientific understanding of the oceans has helped us to mitigate some of these threats. Finally, Dr Patrick Martin gave the students a flavour for what it is like doing field work in marine science, showing them photos both from his work in high-latitude open-ocean environments and coastal seas in South-East Asia.
